🌳 Philippine Agarwood: The “Wood of the Gods”
Deep in the forests of Mindanao grows one of the world’s most coveted natural treasures—agarwood, locally known as lapnisan. This resinous heartwood forms when Aquilaria trees are infected by a specific mold, producing a dark, fragrant material that has been prized for centuries. Known across Asia as the “Wood of the Gods”, agarwood is used in perfumes, incense, traditional medicine, and luxury goods.
In the Philippines, agarwood holds both promise and peril. With nine endemic Aquilaria species, the country is uniquely positioned in the global market. High-quality resin can fetch up to ₱1 million per kilogram, making it one of the most expensive raw materials in the world. Demand continues to rise, especially in religious ceremonies and luxury industries, fueling interest in cultivation.
Commercial farming is now emerging, with plantations experimenting in inoculation techniques to produce resin more efficiently. Yet, strict regulations remain in place. Since 2021, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has allowed propagation only under permits, aiming to balance economic opportunity with conservation. Enforcement challenges persist, as illegal harvesting and trade threaten both biodiversity and sustainability.
Despite these risks, agarwood’s cultural and economic significance cannot be overstated. It embodies centuries of tradition while offering modern farmers a potential livelihood—if managed responsibly. For the Philippines, lapnisan is more than just a tree; it is a symbol of heritage, resilience, and the delicate balance between nature and commerce.
